FMCSA Poised for New Leadership with Nomination of Derek Barrs
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) is expected to see a new permanent leader at its helm for the first time since 2024.
Chief Derek Barrs, a former head of the Florida Highway Patrol and a veteran of over 30 years in law enforcement, is reportedly set to be nominated as the agency’s next administrator. His appointment would mark a return to steady leadership for the FMCSA following a series of acting administrators.
“Chief Barrs’ impressive background is a welcome addition to FMCSA’s mission,” said CVTA Chairman Danny Bradford. “Particularly now, at this time when increased enforcement of training standards is critical to ensuring safety and a successful trucking workforce. CVTA is looking forward to working with Derek Barrs and our membership congratulates him on the nomination for FMCSA Administrator.”
Barrs brings to the role a strong background in commercial vehicle enforcement and a long-standing connection to the trucking industry through his involvement with organizations like the American Trucking Associations’ Law Enforcement Advisory Board and the Florida Trucking Association. His nomination has already received positive feedback from stakeholders, including the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association (OOIDA), which expressed hope that Barrs will prioritize key industry concerns such as combatting freight fraud, reducing overregulation, and supporting safe, qualified drivers.
For the Commercial Vehicle Training Association (CVTA), the potential confirmation of Barrs presents an opportunity to strengthen collaboration between industry and federal regulators on key workforce and safety issues. With a new administrator in place, CVTA looks forward to continuing its advocacy for quality training standards, fair regulatory practices, and initiatives that promote the development of a skilled and safety-focused driver workforce. As the industry awaits official confirmation, the CVTA remains committed to engaging with FMCSA leadership to support the future of commercial motor vehicle training and safety.
