Washington, D.C. — The Commercial Vehicle Training Association (CVTA) applauds key provisions in the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBB) benefiting students entering the trucking industry. With the President’s signature, these reforms are now officially law.
The new law expands 529 education savings accounts to cover career and technical training. For the first time, students and families can now use these tax-advantaged accounts to pay for tuition, books, fees, and supplies related to workforce training programs, on-the-job training, apprenticeships, and non-degree credentials. This critical update provides more Americans—including homeschooled and non-traditional students—with access to the tools they need to pursue truck driver training and other skilled trades.
CVTA played a leading role in shaping this effort. In October 2023, then-Chairman Jerome Redmond testified before the U.S. House Ways and Means Committee in support of the Freedom to Invest in Tomorrow’s Workforce Act (H.R. 1477), which laid the foundation for the 529 expansion. His testimony, delivered on behalf of CVTA members nationwide, underscored the need to eliminate financial barriers to high-quality training programs—a message that helped shape today’s policy victory.
Jerome’s testimony was memorable and compelling, with stories about the positive life-changing effects of earning a CDL, both in his own family and his students’ families. This in turn caused many representatives on the committee, including Chairman Jason Smith, to tell their personal stories about the importance of truck driving as a career.
This new law represents a significant step forward for workforce development. By expanding access to affordable, skills-based training, these OBBB provisions will offer increased truck driver training options for job-ready Americans wanting to participate in the transportation industry. This is a promising development for the future of our national infrastructure and the broader economy.
CVTA thanks Congress and the Administration for their leadership in advancing these pro-trucking reforms. We remain committed to ensuring they are implemented effectively to benefit students and the industry as a whole.
