President Biden Proposes Overall Increase In Funding For Education
Of $3.1 Billion – A 3.9% Increase Over Fiscal Year 2023
Overview
Yesterday, Monday, March 11, 2024, President Biden released his 2025 Budget – a non-binding “blueprint” released each year by the Administration outlining detailed information on the various appropriations and funding priorities as part of a comprehensive Budget. The most recent document contains the Budget Message of the President, information on the President’s priorities, analytical perspectives, summary tables and appendices.
In regard to “Education” the Budget Summary states:
The President’s 2025 Budget for ED makes critical investments to: spur the Nation’s future prosperity; accelerate academic growth; bolster mental health supports for students at all levels; advance the needs
of students with disabilities; increase affordability and quality in higher education; and improve connections between the K-12 system, higher education, and the workforce.
The respect to “Education Beyond High School” the Budget Summary highlights seven priorities, including—
- Improving College Affordability and Providing Free Community College;
- Investing in Services for Student Borrowers;
- Reducing College Costs for Students;
- Eliminating the Origination Fee on Student Loans;
- Reimaging the Transition from High School to Higher Education;
- Supporting Students through Graduation; and
- Expands Institutional Capacity at HBCUs, TCCUs, MSIs—including Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSIs)—and Community Colleges.
CSPEN, along with the rest of the higher education community, are currently reviewing the details behind these stated priorities and additional information contained in the summary and details of the U.S. Department of Labor and critical programs like WIOA and Apprenticeships.
