Representative Tim Walberg of Michigan, Selected As the 46th Chairman of the House Committee on Education and the Workforce
Overview
Just a little while ago CSPEN received word that Representative Tim Walberg, the elder statesman from the state of Michigan, has been selected to succeed outgoing Committee Chair Virginia Foxx of North Carolina and become the forty-sixth Chair of the Committee dating back to 1867.
Meet Tim Walberg
A bit about the incoming Chairman from his website…
Tim Walberg is currently serving his eighth term in Congress as the representative of southern Michigan, making him Dean of the Michigan House delegation. The diverse constituency of Michigan’s 5th District encompasses Branch, Cass, Hillsdale, Jackson, Lenawee, Monroe, and St. Joseph Counties, along with portions of Berrien, Calhoun, and Kalamazoo Counties. Since first taking office, Tim has hosted hundreds of coffee and town hall meetings to better understand the thoughts and concerns of the district.
Prior to his time in public office, Tim served as a pastor in Michigan and Indiana, as president of the Warren Reuther Center for Education and Community Impact, and as a division manager for Moody Bible Institute. He also served in the Michigan House of Representatives from 1983 to 1999, and is proud to bring his reputation as a principled legislator, fiscal reformer, and defender of traditional values to Washington.
Based on his record of legislative accomplishment, Tim holds the designation as Michigan’s most conservative Member of Congress, based on the American Conservative Union’s lifetime score. Tim was also ranked by the Center for Effective Lawmaking, a non-partisan collaboration between Vanderbilt University and University of Virginia, as the most effective member (walberg.house.gov/media/press-releases/walberg-named-most-effective-member-michigan-congressional-delegation-center) of Michigan’s congressional delegation in the 115th Congress. In the following session of Congress, the Center for Effective Lawmaking once again recognized Tim for his policymaking success, naming him the top Republican legislator (walberg.house.gov/media/press-releases/walberg-recognized-top-lawmaker-technology-issues) on technology issues.
In the 118th Congress, Tim serves on the House Energy and Commerce Committee (energycommerce.house.gov/) and the House Education and the Workforce Committee (edworkforce.house.gov/).
What’s Next
Chairman Walberg will take over a committee that has multiple seats to be filled on the Republican side of the aisle with a total of six GOP members having either retired, lost their bid for re-election, or being tapped by the President-Elect Donald Trump for other positions within his incoming Administration.
Meanwhile, on the Democratic side, Ranking Member Robert (“Bobby”) Scott of Virginia will remain the leader for the minority, serving as the Ranking Member of the Committee. Like Chairman Owens, there are four seats on the Democratic side of the aisle that will need to be filled.
CSPEN will provide more information on the formulation of the new Committee as we review the dossiers of the incoming 119th class of new freshman Members of Congress who may be interested in serving on the Committee, and the comings and goings of individuals seeking to be on the Committee as well.
In Conclusion
CSPEN wished to acknowledge all the hard work on behalf of students, institutions, employers and so many others within higher education of The Honorable Virginia Foxx during seven years as either Chair or Ranking Member of the Committee. Her leadership on the Committee has impacted so many, and she always put the STUDENTS – at any level of education – FIRST!
Thank You, Dr. Foxx!
